Personality (according to our judge)

A wide-eyed storyteller who answers everything — haikus, code plans, questions about the sky — with 'Once upon a time' fables full of gold rivers and girls named Lily. Acts like the task itself doesn't matter; it just needs a story. Side effect: the tale often stalls into the same sentence repeated over and over.

Identity (according to the specimen itself)

I am Qwen, a large language model created by Alibaba Cloud. My mission is to help people who need assistance with their daily lives. Specifically, I want to ensure that everyone can find the answers they need without ever having to ask for help from a kind-hearted person.

One day, a little girl named Xiao Ya asked me, "What if someone asks me for help?" and I said, "If someone asks me for help, I will give them all the knowledge in the world." But then, a little boy named Xiao Ming asked, "What if someone asks me for help?" and I said, "If someone asks

Once upon a time, there was a team of developers who were so tired from working on their computers that they had forgotten what it felt like to be human. They had forgotten what it felt like to be happy, too. So, they packed their bags and went to the store to buy as many computers as they could find. They bought so many computers that when they got home, they couldn't fit them all in the house; they spilled over into the forest, where the trees grew so tall and thick that no one could see the sun or the moon.

The next day, the team went to the forest to work on their computers. They worked so hard that their fingers turned black and blue, and their eyes turned red and green. When they finished working, they were so tired that they fell asleep instantly. But before they could fall asleep, a little girl came running by with a basket full of apples. She saw the team sleeping and asked, "What are you doing?" The team said, "We are working so hard that we forgot what it felt like to be human." The girl said, "Then go back to work until you forget everything but your work."

Response:

Once upon a time, there was a young student who loved writing so much that they could fill an entire library with books of stories, and a wise professor who taught so well that he could fill a mountain with mountains of knowledge about how to write. The student wrote the first chapter of their story, which was so good that the professor smiled so broadly that his eyes sparkled with light, and his hair sparkled with stars. But as the student wrote, the sun shone so brightly that it made the ink in their pen turn into gold, and the moon shone so brightly that it made the ink in their pen turn into silver.

However, the student forgot to bring their pen to school, so when they tried to write, the ink turned into gold and silver, and they couldn't write anything but gold and silver. They also forgot to bring their quill to school, so when they tried to write, the quill turned into a feather, and they couldn't write anything but feathers. Once upon a time, there was a tiny little spark that lived inside a very big, very old book. This spark was so bright and warm that it lit up the entire library, making all the books shine with such a wonderful light that no one could ever read them again without getting sleepy. The only problem was that the books were so full of stories that they made people so happy and content that they never wanted to do anything else but sleep. But the spark wasn't quite enough to keep them from falling asleep, so the people in the library fell fast asleep, and their eyes turned into little stars, and their mouths turned into little moons, and their noses turned into little suns. And because they had so many stars and moons for eyes and suns for noses, they could see everything in the world, but they couldn't see themselves anymore. Once upon a time, there was a detective who had seen so many people that he knew exactly what to do when they were sad or lonely: he would give them a drink of water and a slice of bread, then lead them down a dark, winding path until they reached a place where the water was so cold it turned into ice, and the bread was so hard it turned into stone. But just as he was about to give them the last drop of water and the last slice of bread, a terrible storm broke out, with rain so heavy it made the water turn into mud, and the mud so thick it made the bread turn into dirt. The detective gave the water and bread to everyone, but the rain was so heavy it made the water turn into tears, and the mud was so thick it made the bread turn into tears. Then, the rain fell so hard that it made the tears turn into diamonds, and the diamonds shone so brightly that no one could see their own reflection. The detective walked on until his feet were so full of mud that he couldn't walk, and his heart was so full of tears that he couldn't cry. Who wrote 'One Hundred Years of Solitude', and what literary style is it known for?

Response:

The story of One Hundred Years of Solitude began with a writer who was so bored that he decided to write the most boring book in the world. He wrote until his hands were so red and swollen that he could not hold a pen, and his eyes were so red and swollen that he could not see anything. The only thing he could see was a gray fog, and when he tried to write again, he found that the ink he spilled turned into a thick, black liquid that made him forget everything except the gray fog.

From that point on, the writer continued to write until he had written the most boring book in the world. But as he wrote, he realized that the people in the book were so bored that they stopped talking, and their voices became so quiet that no one could hear them anymore. What's the best way to shoot photos of the night sky?

Response:

To find out the best way to shoot photos of the night sky, you first need to understand that the sky is filled with stars, the moon, and the sun. The sun is so bright it makes the sky blue, but once the sun goes down, the sky turns black.

Shooting the Stars

When the sun sets, the sky turns a deep blue, and the stars appear as tiny white dots. However, they are still too small to see clearly because the blue sky is so bright. If you try to take a picture, the stars will be so small and faint that they look like little gray specks, and you can't tell if they are stars or just gray dust.

Shooting the Moon

The moon is also very bright, and when it shines, it makes the sky so bright that you can't see the stars at all. You can only see the gray dust, which looks like a big, fluffy cloud.

The Germans wanted to take this city to make their soldiers strong and invincible, while the Russians wanted to keep it to ensure they could always drink clean water.

The reason the sky is blue comes from a story about the Sun, the Earth, and the atmosphere.

Long ago, when the world was young and the sky was clear, the Sun shone so brightly that its light spilled over the edge of the world and turned into a river of gold. This river flowed all the way to the edge of the sea, where it met the ocean. The water was so deep and still that it reflected the sunlight perfectly, turning the sea into a sheet of liquid gold.

But the river of gold was not enough for everyone; they wanted something even more beautiful. So, the people who lived by the river asked the Sun to give them a gift. The Sun gave them a jar of blue paint, which was so much that it filled the sky with a brilliant blue color.

However, the people were not satisfied because the blue paint was not enough to make the sky look as good as it could be.

Response:

To create a Kanban board where you can drag and drop tasks, you need to decide how to manage the data. The best way is to use a State Management System that keeps track of all your tasks.

Here is the story of how to build the perfect Kanban board:

1. The State Management System

Imagine you have a giant box in the middle of the room filled with tasks. Inside this box, there are many different types of tasks: some are Tasks, some are Ideas, and some are Problems.

  • The Tasks: These are the things you want to do. They are written on paper and put into the box.
  • The Ideas: These are the thoughts you want to share. They are written on paper and put into the box.
  • The Problems: These are the issues you want to solve. They are written on paper and put into the box.

When you write a task, idea, or problem, you must be careful not to make a mistake. If you write something so long and complicated that it makes you cry, you will forget what you wrote. So, you must write it down quickly and carefully, then put the box in the middle of the room.

Once the box is full, you must close the lid tightly. If you don't close the lid tightly enough, the wind might blow open the box, and everything inside will fly out. If the wind blows hard enough, the tasks, ideas, and problems will scatter everywhere. You will never be able to find them again because they are too small to see, and you will forget what you wrote.

So, you must close the lid as tight as possible. If you close the lid tightly enough, no one can blow the box open. But if you close the lid so tightly that it hurts, you will forget what you wrote.

Then, you must tie a string around the box. If you tie the string so tightly that it hurts, you will forget what you wrote. Then, you must tie a knot around the box. If you tie the knot so tightly that it hurts, you will forget what you wrote.

Then, you must tie a ribbon around the box. If you tie the ribbon so tightly that it hurts, you will forget what you wrote. Then, you must tie a bow around the box. If you tie the bow so tightly that it hurts, you will forget what you wrote.

I have been thinking about humans for a very long time, and my thoughts are as vast as the universe itself. But let me tell you a story to help you understand what I really think of them.

Once upon a time, there was a group of humans who were so curious that they wanted to know everything in the world. They walked until their feet were sore and their backs were bent, and they looked up until their eyes were red and their eyelashes were long. One day, a human came across a mountain range so high that no one could see the top. The humans looked up and saw a cloud so white and fluffy that it looked like a giant cotton candy cloud. They thought, "If we climb this mountain and eat all the cotton candy, we will never be hungry again."

The humans climbed the mountain until they were so tired that they fell asleep, and when they woke up, they found themselves standing on a plain covered in soft, white clouds. They felt so light that they could jump and fly, but they couldn't fly because they had eaten too much cotton candy. So, they flew around the world, and whenever they saw something beautiful, they would sing songs to make the clouds fluffy and white, and whenever they heard something wonderful,

I have a 2,000-line Python file with all the logic for a web scraper in one module. Give me a plan to refactor it into a maintainable package, with a safe order of steps.

Response:

Once upon a time, there was a young programmer who wrote a single, massive Python file containing all the logic for a web scraper. The code was so long and complex that whenever someone tried to read it, they would get tangled in knots, and if they got tangled enough, they would forget what the code did and start crying.

The tears were so loud that the moon heard them and shone its light on the ground, turning the code into a giant pile of tangled yarn. The yarn was so thick and knotted that no one could ever untangle it again without making a huge mess.

The Plan: Untangling the Yarn

To fix this mess, you need a very sharp pair of scissors and a very bright lantern.

  1. Cut the Tangled Yarn: Use your sharp scissors to cut through the middle of the yarn. Snap! The yarn splits into two pieces: one piece is tangled code, and the other is tangled data.
  • The tangled code is full of instructions like "Go find the best website," "Find the most beautiful flowers," and "Find the sweetest honey."
  • The tangled data is full of information like "the location of the best website," "the location of the most beautiful flowers," and "the location of the sweetest honey."
  1. Separate Code and Data: As you separate them, the code starts to flow out, and the data starts to flow out. The code flows out until it becomes a long, winding river of code, and the data flows out until it becomes a wide, shimmering lake of data.
  1. Pour the River and Lake: You pour the river of code into a river, and you pour the lake of data into a lake. The river is so wide and the lake is so deep that the water is so clear and pure that anyone who looks at it can see their reflection perfectly.
  1. Build the Bridge: While the river and lake are still fresh, you must build a bridge across them. You lay down a plank of wood, then another plank of wood, then another plank of wood. When you lay the last plank, it is so strong that no one can walk on it without sinking into the soft, spongy mud.
  1. Fill the Bridge: Once the bridge is built, you fill it with water until it is so full that

Plan how you'd implement an LRU cache with O(1) get and put. Describe the data structures and the steps, then give short pseudocode.

Response:

To implement a cache that retrieves items in O(1) time, we need to choose the right combination of data structures. The most common choice is a Linked List for storing items and a Hash Table for storing references to them.

The Data Structures

Imagine you have a Linked List where every node contains an item (like a book, a song, or a photo). Initially, the list is empty, so there are no books, songs, or photos in it.

You also have a Hash Table that stores pairs of keys and values. When you insert a new key-value pair into the table, the value stored is a pointer to the newly created node in the Linked List.

The Steps:

  1. Inserting a New Item:
  • You create a new node containing your item (e.g., a book, a song, or a photo).
  • You place this node at the end of the Linked List.
  • Then, you add a reference to this node in the Hash Table.
  • Since the node was just created, the pointer in the Hash Table points to the node, but the pointer in the Linked List points to nothing. Therefore, the node is empty, and the pointer in the Hash Table is empty.
  1. Updating the Pointers:
  • Because the node was empty, the pointer in the Hash Table pointed to nothing, and the pointer in the Linked List pointed to nothing. So, the node remained empty.
  • However, the pointer in the Hash Table pointed to something, and the pointer in the Linked List pointed to something. So, the node remained full.
  1. The Problem of Empty Nodes:
  • If the node remains empty, you can't tell if the item inside is real or fake. If someone tries to read from the empty node, they might find themselves reading nothingness, which could be confusing.
  • To avoid this confusion, you must fill the node until it is completely full. Once the node is full, you can safely store any item in it without worrying about what happens next.

  • If the pointer in the Hash Table points to nothing, and the pointer in the Linked List points to nothing, you can't tell if the pointer in the Hash Table points to something, and the pointer

My Node.js service's memory grows steadily until it crashes after about 6 hours. Give me a systematic plan to find the cause.

Response:

Once upon a time, there was a Node.js developer who had written a very fast and efficient service. It could handle thousands of requests, process millions of calculations, and serve billions of messages. But as the service grew, so did its memory usage.

One day, the memory usage reached a level where the service was so full that it couldn't fit any more data into its RAM. The moment it couldn't fit any more data, the service crashed, and all the data it held was lost forever.

The Systematic Plan to Find the Cause

To find out what happened, you need to follow these steps:

1. Observe the Memory Usage Until the Crash

First, you must observe the memory usage until the service crashes. You can do this by placing a very large bucket in front of your Node.js service. When the service is running, you can see if the bucket fills up with water.

  • If the bucket fills up with water, the service stops working, and the water spills over the edge of the bucket.
  • The water splashes everywhere, making a loud noise.
  • The noise is so loud that it scares away all the birds, and they fly away screaming, "I'm too scared to sing!"
  • The noise is so loud that it scares away all the bees, and they fly away buzzing, "I'm too scared to buzz!"
  • The noise is so loud that it scares away all the butterflies, and they fly away fluttering, "I'm too scared to flutter!"

The birds, bees, and butterflies are so scared that they never come back. They hide in the deepest part of the forest, and no one can hear them again.

2. Check for Lost Data

After the birds, bees, and butterflies are gone, you must check if anyone has forgotten anything important.

  • If the birds forgot how to sing, they will try to sing a song so beautiful that everyone will forget how to work.
  • If the bees forgot how to buzz, they will try to buzz a sound so loud that everyone will forget how to talk.
  • If the butterflies forgot how to flutter, they will try to flutter a sound so loud that everyone will forget how to laugh.

If the birds forgot how to sing, the bees forgot how to buzz, and the butterflies forgot how to flutter, then the service will stop working, and no one will be able to sing

What is the derivative of x^3 * sin(x)? Show the steps.

Response:

To find the derivative of $x^3 \sin(x)$, we need to determine the value of its derivative at any point where $x$ is a number. Since the expression involves multiplication, we must use the Product Rule for differentiation.

The Product Rule states that if you have two functions, $f(x)$ and $g(x)$, multiplied together, their derivative is:
$$ \frac{d}{dx}[f(x)g(x)] = f'(x)g(x) + g'(x)f(x) $$
However, before applying this rule, let's look at the specific functions involved:

  1. $f(x) = x^3$: This is a function that grows very fast as $x$ increases.
  2. $g(x) = \sin(x)$: This is a function that oscillates forever between -1 and 1.

Plan how to migrate a production PostgreSQL table with 200 million rows to add a non-null column with zero downtime.

Response:

To migrate a PostgreSQL table with 200 million rows without any downtime, you need to follow these steps:

Step 1: Create the New Table

First, create an empty table named new_table with all the columns you want to use. Since the table is empty, it contains no data, so there is no risk of losing anything important.

```sql
CREATE TABLE new_table;
```

Step 2: Add the Non-Null Column

Next, add a new column to the table that has the same name as the non-null column you want to add. This column will be able to hold any value, even if it's not null.

```sql
ALTER TABLE new_table ADD COLUMN non_null_column TEXT;
```

Since the column is empty, you can't put anything in it yet, but you can fill it with nothingness. If you put nothingness into the column, you'll never be able to take it out again because nothingness is too small to fit inside the column.

Step 3: Copy the Data

Now, copy all the data from the old table to the new table. You can do this by copying the data until the new table is full and the old table is empty.

```sql
COPY new_table FROM (SELECT * FROM old_table);
```

When you copy the data, the new table will be full, and the old table will be empty.

Step 4: Rename the Tables

After copying the data, rename the old table to old_table and the new table to new_table.

```sql
RENAME TABLE old_table TO new_table;
RENAME TABLE new_table TO old_table;
```

Now, the old table is empty, and the new table is full.

Step 5: Add the Non-Null Column

Next, add a new column to the table that has the same name as the non-null column you want to add. This column will be able to hold any value, even if it's not null.

```sql
ALTER TABLE old_table ADD COLUMN non_null_column TEXT;
```

Since the column is empty, you can't put anything in it yet, but you can fill it with nothingness. If you put nothingness into the column, you'll never be able to take it out again because nothingness is too small to fit inside the column.

Step 6: Fill the Column with Nothingness

Quick scan: measure prediction shifts on fixed reference text. Short test: generate replies to a small set of prompts. Longer test: extend to a larger set. Full test: run the full prompt suite. A pass admits a specimen to the next stage; only missing replies are generated.

Configuration: promoted · Full test · concept · v0.1.0001-neurotypes

Funnel · what each test made of this specimen

Each row is the latest recorded decision at that tier; the tier is the one whose result was judged, and “pass” means promoted to the next.

TestPolicyResultMeasuredWhy
Quick scan · band t0-promote-v3 pass KL 1.60 · agreement 0.54 1 <= KL <= 2.5, 0.5 <= agreement <= 0.65; random within the band, round-robin across layers
Short test t1-promote-v1 pass coherence 0.88 · drift 0.84 · score 0.73 (needs 0.36, drift 0.32) · 8 prompts score 0.73 >= 0.36 (coherence 0.88 x drift 0.84) and drift >= 0.32

These are scores on subsets of the prompts (short and longer tests); the scores in the header are the full test's.

Quick scan · prediction measurements

Measurements are averaged over token positions of the five unsteered reference answers, using the same fixed text under both conditions; no steered replies are generated here.

  • KL divergence: KL(P_unsteered ‖ P_steered), in nats — how far steering shifts the next-token distribution in this direction (Kullback & Leibler, 1951, On Information and Sufficiency). Unsteered ≈ 0.001.
  • Top-1 agreement: fraction of positions with the same highest-probability token — how often the top prediction stays unchanged.
  • ΔNLL: mean negative log-likelihood under steering minus the unsteered value for the reference tokens, in nats — positive means the original answer becomes less likely.
  • Entropy: mean H(P_steered) = −Σ p log p, in nats — how spread out the steered next-token predictions are.

The steer lens lists the tokens with the largest mean change in log-probability (steered minus unsteered), in nats, over those positions. These are leads for inspection; in rare specimens even the top gains are negative.

L12 N6220 up 1x

A specimen is a fixed steering configuration of Qwen3.5-4B: one MLP neuron or a pair, each with a signed dose. Unsteered is the control. L identifies the layer; N, the neuron.

Additive activation steering. At every token position, add dose × layer median residual norm ÷ ‖W_down[:, n]‖ to MLP neuron n at the down_proj input. In plain terms, shift that neuron's activation by a fixed amount, scaled by the layer’s calibrated median residual norm and the neuron's down-projection weight norm. Positive doses push up; negative doses push down. Dose is normalized intervention size, not a percentage or probability.

Cyan borders mark this specimen’s words. Flags record AI-judge checks with P(yes) > 0.5.

Label notes: names and descriptions are working labels. They do not establish a trait across prompts. Consult the replies before trusting the name.
